23 Must-Reads to Improve Negotiation Skills
23 Must-Reads to Improve Negotiation Skills Not everyone is a born negotiator. Without the right words or techniques to barter for what you want, itâs sometimes hard to get your hands on it. Thatâs why negotiation skills are so vital to both your personal and professional life. Fortunately, for those of us who arenât natural negotiators, others who do possess that quality have written books designed to make you more effective. The following 23 books each bring actionable tips to the table so you can bargain like a boss, whether youâre selling a property or asking for a well-deserved raise. Now, get out there and get what you want. Perfecting Your Pitch by Ronald M. Shapiro: You know you have a tough conversation coming up, so what do you do? For many people, the go-to tends to be winging it. Shapiro disagrees with this notion and instead suggests â" and shows the importance of â" planned communication. Negotiating at Work by Deborah M. Kolb and Jessica L. Porter: Negotiation is more than just a way to solve conflict. In the workplace, it can be an agent for change, especially when you use your negotiation powers to break down barriers and update outdated practices. For women, this makes negotiation an especially powerful tool. This book shows you how itâs done. The Power of a Positive No by William Ury: There are right ways to say âno,â and there are wrong ways to say ânoâ â" the latter can cause relationships to fall apart, both personal and professional. Picking the right words and presenting your ânoâ the right way can make all the difference. In fact, it can lead to the âyesâ youâre looking for. This book gives you the skills to make this happen. Getting Past No by William Ury: How are you supposed to compromise without any movement from the opposing side? This book gives you actionable steps to dealing with this and other hard-to-navigate situations, such as maintaining control and handling âdirty tricksâ that could be played. The Confidence Code by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman: Despite their intelligence and high level of education, women still fall behind their male counterparts in the corporate race. Kay and Shipman believe this has to do with the female level of confidence, which is typically lower than that of their proud male coworkers. They argue that a boost of confidence will do female workers wonders in all areas, negotiation included. Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss: Chris Voss was once the FBIâs lead international kidnapping negotiator, so needless to say, he knows how to strike a deal. His high-stakes negotiations might not seem similar to what youâre trying to accomplish, but there are certainly overarching truths to all negotiation situations, and he shares many in this book. Women Donât Ask by Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever: Youâre not the only woman who has a hard time asking for what you really want or need â" itâs a gender-specific problem that this book fully explores. By reading this book, you will learn how to ask and see the difference this skill has made in the lives of other powerful women. How to Win Friends Influence People by Dale Carnegie: Hereâs another self-help book thatâs stood the test of time: It was originally published at the low point of the Great Depression. Clearly, Carnegieâs advice is still solid, and it covers everything a good negotiator would need â" making first impressions, maintaining conversation, giving positive criticisms, etc. Beyond Reason by Roger Fisher and Daniel Shapiro: Another member of the Harvard Negotiation Project weighs in on the practice in this book. Fisher works with psychologist Daniel Shapiro, whoâs an expert on the emotional side of negotiation. Together, theyâll teach you how to channel your emotions into a discussion thatâs fruitful for both sides. Built to Win by Lawrence Susskind and Hallam Movius: This book applies to managers who have others bargain on their behalf. It not only points out potential flaws in your business that could get in the way of a deal, but it also shows you how to mentor your team so they negotiate confidently and correctly. Getting to Yes by Roger Fisher: âGetting to Yesâ has been in print for more than 30 years, proof that the tips in this book have made and will continue to make a difference in the lives of negotiators everywhere. Its tips cover conflict in a range of situations, and its suggested techniques for solving them come from the Harvard Negotiation Project, a group that specializes in conflict resolution at just about any level. Pre-Suasion by Robert Cialdini: Robert Cialdini is a social psychologist, so he knows how people work. His research shows that the most important moment of negotiation isnât when you deliver your message, but during the set-up. How receptive did your audience become to your pitch? Find out some of the best techniques for setting up your negotiation here. When I Stop Talking, Youâll Know Iâm Dead by Jerry Weintraub: Perhaps the self-help genre doesnât appeal to you. If not, pick up this autobiography, in which Weintraub flaunts his very best skill: persuasion. See how it influenced and bettered his life, and you might just be inspired to pick up a book with more actionable tips to improve your own negotiation prowess. Just Listen by Mark Goulston and Keith Ferrazzi: Youâll never get through to someone who doesnât feel like youâre listening, and vice versa. Break down walls with the tips in this book, designed to ensure the person on the other end of your negotiation feels heard and understood â" and more likely to compromise. 3-D Negotiation by David A. Lax and James K. Sebenius: Most negotiators enter a session considering only what theyâre going to do when face-to-face with a client, colleague, etc. Lax and Sebenius believe this is simply not enough and that there are three dimensions to any good negotiation tactic. All the moves youâll need to make your own 3-D negotiation reside on the pages of this book. Negotiating the Nonnegotiable by Daniel Shapiro: According to Shapiro, there are five emotional forces that get in the way of a compromise or agreement: vertigo, taboos, repetition compulsion, assault on the sacred and identity politics. Theyâre the reason that a calm disagreement can turn into emotional upheaval. The good news is you can overcome these feelings and still come to a conclusion that suits all parties â" this book will show you how. Asking by Jerold Panas: One of the hardest things we have to do in life is ask for what we want, especially if it involves asking for money. Jerold Panas did that for a living and turns his experiences into advice for those who need to do the same. Better yet, itâs a promised short read that most can make their way through in an hour or less. Crucial Conversations by Kerry Patterson: Thereâs quite a difference between being persuasive and being abrasive. âCrucial Conversationsâ aims to help you make that switch, as well as others that promote positive, thoughtful conversations rather than emotional ones. What Every Body is Saying by Joe Navarro: Body language can say a lot about a person, and learning to read it can help you improve your negotiation skills. Navarro gives tips to make a quick reading on someone else, as well as how to improve your own body language in the eyes of others. The One-Minute Negotiator by Don Hutson and George Lucas: Thereâs no one-size-fits-all way to negotiate, as youâve probably seen personally. Huston and Lucas teach you how to understand your own negotiation strategy and how to adapt it in order to gel with whom youâre trying to negotiate. Getting More by Stuart Diamond: This bookâs message applies to any type of conflict-resolution, whether itâs a deal at work or a deal with kids who want ice cream before bed. It prescribes a better understanding of the other sideâs feelings and point of view, rather than exerting power or logic. Influence Without Authority by Allan R. Cohen and David L. Bradford: Without any real authority over your colleagues, you can feel frozen when trying to get others to help you with a particular professional task. Cohen and Bradford show that you donât need to wait around until youâre given the right to require support from others. Instead, you can strategically reach out and break through the invisible barriers that kept you from doing so before The Art of Woo by G. Richard Shell and Mario Moussa: Letâs end on a positive note with a book that exudes feel-good vibes. The authorsâ four-step process is all it could take to change the mind of your skeptics. They believe positive persuasion should be just that: opening hearts and minds in the right way. Donât forget to comment below about your go-to reads on negotiation, and share with your friends! Hard Job Interviews Lead to Increased Job Satisfaction
Hard Job Interviews Lead to Increased Job Satisfaction Every job seeker has had at least one of those interviews where they leave the office thinking, well, I blew it. But a new study says you shouldnât be so quick to write off an arduous interview; as it turns out, the jobs those lead to tend to make workers happier. Job review and salary site Glassdoor.com tracked more than 150,000 interviewees who were ultimately hired and later posted reviews on the site. The candidates who said they had the toughest interviews were the ones who later reported that they were happiest at their jobs. âHow well workers are matched to companies sort of depends on what happens at the interview,â says Glassdoor chief economist Andrew Chamberlain. âA more difficult interview is like more careful test,â he says. âMy basic takeaway is that very easy interviews do a poor job verifying the skills and fit.â If the hiring manager doesnât do a very good job, the candidate might walk out thinking the interview was a cinch, but if they get the job only to discover that thereâs a mismatch, theyâre not going to be happy. Itâs also possible that people are more satisfied with jobs they land after hard interviews because they feel a greater sense of accomplishment. When Glassdoor measured interview difficulty on a scale of one to five, it found that people were happiest in jobs where they rated the interview as a fourâ"nearly as tough as it gets. Chamberlain says the reason why the satisfaction effect falls off for the very hardest interviews is because raking candidates over the coals could be indicative of flaws in the corporate culture like an overly competitive environment or a tendency to burn out new hires quickly. The questions that tend to strike fear into the hearts of candidates are brain teasers, behavioral questions, business problems, and skills demonstrations, Chamberlain says. The good news is that brain teasers are going out of style. âToday, I think what companies are shifting towards are more specific questions that ask about skills, like asking to show that they can give a presentation or write code,â he says. Although Glassdoor found a statistically significant link between interview difficulty and job satisfaction across all kinds of work, certain fields stand out for having an unusually strong link between the two. Across all industries, this effect was most pronounced in technology, business services, and constructionâ"perhaps not surprising, since all three industries require people to have mastery of highly specialized, technical skills to get the work done. To keep a grueling interview from fraying your nerves, Chamberlain suggests you go in prepared to demonstrate all the skills you have on your resume, and donât leave any question or problem the interviewer throws at you unanswered. Even if youâre not sure of an answer, youâll be giving the interviewer a glimpse into the way your mind works (which might be what theyâre after anyway). âThe best way to avoid getting stressed out is to remember that a more difficult interview is uncomfortable, but itâs a good sign for you that youâre being placed correctly, that the job will be a good fit for you,â he says. If youâre mentally planning your grocery list or weekend activities, thatâs when you should be concerned, Chamberlain says. âIf a job interview feels too easy, thatâs something to worry about.â Read next: How to Ace Any Interview and Land the Job of Your Dreams Video Player is loading.Play VideoPlayMuteCurrent Time 0:00/Duration 0:00Loaded: 0%Stream Type LIVESeek to live, currently playing liveLIVERemaining Time -0:00 SharePlayback Rate1xChaptersChaptersDescriptionsdescriptions off, selectedCaptionscaptions settings, opens captions settings dialogcaptions off, selectedAudio TrackFullscreenThis is a modal window.Beginning of dialog window. 6 Ways To Show Your Value Without Being A Jerk - Work It Daily
6 Ways To Show Your Value Without Being A Jerk - Work It Daily Team dynamics can often be difficult to negotiate. At work, generally speaking, you are on a team and you contribute. The problem is that you also want to elevate your career and stand out to your boss. So, how can you do that without the rest of the team feeling like you are a jerk (or worse)? Related: 6 Career Management Hacks That Will Get You Ahead Iâve had the gift of working in amazing environments on rock star teams. I have also had the (ahem) opposite experience. Iâve managed teams, been part of teams, as well as been an individual contributor, and through these years, Iâve found there are a few surefire ways to show youâre an asset without being a show off. So, here goes. 1. Do what you say My favorite direct reports were good for their word. They were trustworthy. You could truly count on them to deliver, and not just for me. I would see these team members and teammates always doing what they said they would. People notice. It might not seem like it, but when you do what you say always, you will get the important assignments. Being the one that does the important stuff is viewed as valuable, and you're valuable without being a jerk - youâre the good guy that people can count on to get stuff done. 2. Solve problems The people who come to me with solutions stand out. Problem solvers who are actively working on solutions to organizational challenges stand out for obvious reasons. They care about the problems of the company and are taking the time to solve them. There is a BIG difference between people who solve problems and people who try not to create them. The problem solvers stand out. And when they include others in the solution, all the better, because they are showing me that they are leaders who can activate others to join the cause of solving the big problems weâre facing. 3. Share in victory Further, managers know that a team builds a victory and solves a problem together. Good managers also can see whoâs doing the lionâs share of the work and really contributing to the victory. If itâs you, be sure you are gracious in sharing that victory with the team, that stands out to good managers and to the team. 4. Focus on the mission Be monomaniacal about achieving the goals of the company and the team. When you see the team headed down a rabbit hole, gently guide them back to land. Be the one who is focused on achieving the goals and you will stand out. You might be considered a jerk for being the one who asks for focus by the ones who are unfocused, but they will forgive you when you achieve the goals, solve the problems, and share the victory (see above). 5. Be a trusted resource I frequently advocate being a student of your industry. This is applicable to standing out without being perceived as a jerk when you are sharing information with your teammates about the industry and the business. When you are the go-to for information and insights, you are going to stand out. However, if you do this in a smarty-pants spirit, you are on a slippery slope to Jerktown, population: 1. Being a trusted resource means you are sharing information in the spirit of continuous learning and development. Share that you saw something interesting in the media about the company, competitor, or industry. And when you share this information, offer an insight and an initiation to hear what the recipient of this information thinks. 6. No brag, just fact If you do awesome work, itâs ok to privately share what your proud of with your manager. Key word, privately. Schedule time to share your excitement you're your manager. You should try to have monthly check-points with your manager so that you can gather feedback and continue to advance your career. Keep in mind when you are privately sharing your work with your manager, do it from a place of excitement and pride, not from a place of ego and bragger-y. Excitement is contagious. Your manager may also be able to help you take the work even further. Who stands out on your team without being a jerk? What do they do? Share with me in the comments - I love reading your ideas! Military to Civilian Resume How to Translate Your Service Experience
Military to Civilian Resume How to Translate Your Service ExperiencePosted on July 23, 2018January 28, 2019 by Jon Shields How to write a military-to-civilian resumeGet started by creating a master military resumeConsult your VMET and fitness evaluations for ideas and resume contentTranslate your military titles and skills for civilian readersFocus on experience that is relevant to the job for which youre applyingTop-load your resume with targeted keywords and accomplishmentsDont separate your military experience from your other work experienceGet help if you need itMilitary veterans transition into the corporate job market with a broad skillset and experience shouldering unimaginable responsibility. Unfortunately, fruchtwein civilians have no idea whats going on in the military or how to decipher military terminology. To succeed in a post-military job search, its up to a transitioning veteran to create a military-to-civilian resume that describes their experience in a way that makes sense to civilian recruiters and hiring managers. To gain some insight, I spoke with three military resume expertsJen St. Pierre,Warriors to Work Specialist at Wounded Warrior ProjectDavid Madden,Veterans Representative at Worksource King CountyClif Cooper, Former Army Transition ManagerThe military speaks its own languages. Each service has its own way of communicating things. Even between the different services within the military, I cant read some of their lingo, said Cooper. If the Army has trouble understanding the Navy or Air Force, you can bet that a civilian recruiter will be confused by all of it.If the veteran went straight from school into the military and hasnt had any type of civilian employment, when they come out, everything they speak is military language, said Madden. How do you go to an employer, who really knows leidhing about the military, and answer when they ask, What was your job description? The first step in creating a strong military-to-civilian resume is to , as St. Pierre put it, demilitarize the language. What I mean by that is avoiding military terms and acronyms that civilian recruiters and hiring managers arent going to understand.Translate your titles, acronyms, equipment, skills, and anything else that could go over the head of a civilian decision-maker.Start with a master military resume using the terms you know bestWhen youre looking at a blank resume template, translating your military experience on the fly makes it a mora difficult process than it needs to be.Itd be like me applying for a job in the Hague and trying to write it in Dutch in my first draft, explained Cooper. I would write it in English and then translate it to Dutch. For veterans struggling to get started, creating a master military resume can be an effective first step.I tell people when they write their resume, use military lingo on your first draft because thats what you know, said Cooper. In this master resume we can speak to everything, said Madden. They hav e that opportunity to get it out of their system.Consult your documentation and fitness evaluationsThere are records and resources available to all veterans that can provide a starting point or fill in some gaps.VMET stands for Vocational and Military Employment Training, explained St. Pierre. That is a document that every single service member receives when they transfer out. They dont really realize that they have access to it. Its basically their military resume. It contains every MOS military occupational specialty they were in with a description. Not only that, but every single course and certification they took.Alot of information is available on your fitness reports or evaluations and quarterly counselings, added Cooper. Its different in every branch of the service, continued St. Pierre. It could be a fit eval, or a fit rep. These are performance reviews. These contain such valuable information for a resume. They contain measurable results, number one. And number two, real sp ecifics about their accomplishments, spoken from their leaders point of view.Digging up these documents can make a world of difference when it comes to creating a strong resume foundation.Translate your military ranks, titles, and dutiesCivilians do not understand the hierarchy or responsibilities of military titles. One of the fruchtwein helpful things you can do on your military-to-civilian resume is to change your titles into something a civilian reader will find familiar.fruchtwein corporate and profitable environments arent going to have any idea how to translate E1, E2, first sergeant, warned St. Pierre. Instead of taking the time to research it, theyre going to count the candidate out of the lot because they dont understand.St. Pierre shared these examplesFor instance, E7 to E9 the civilian equivalent could be director, supervisor, department manager, senior advisor. Below that is an E4 to an E6, which depending on what service theyre in would be a corporal, specialist, pett y officer, or sergeant. That translates over to assistant manager, line supervisor, section leader, task leader, foreman. Same things with the lower ranks, like E1 to E3. Maybe they were private or a seaman recruit or a seaman apprentice. That could be a production worker, an assembler, a technician, an apprentice, or a team member. So even when theyre lower ranks, you can still give it a strong civilian title. This practice also extends beyond official titles to roles and duties. If I was a main battle tank crew member, in the civilian world, we would translate that to heavy equipment operator, explained St. Pierre. Were taking those titles and were civilianizing them. This can be a tough pill for veterans to swallow. Its notjust heavy equipment, after all. The responsibility of menschengerecht safety or millions of dollars in equipment that comes with performing any number of military duties wont be found in your average civilian job description. The military gives you an immense amou nt of responsibility that you will never be responsible for again, said Cooper, but making your military resume accessible for civilian hiring personnel will make a big difference in your job search.Perhaps the most powerful tool for this type of translation is O*NETs Military Crosswalk search.Enter your service branch and classification code or title to receive a detailed report including all the tasks, skills, technology, and knowledge associated with the position, as well as a list of civilian-equivalent job titles.Alot of times individuals do not even know Military Crosswalk exists, said Madden.Translate everything you can on your resume. St. Pierre suggested spelling out any necessary acronyms and even replacing the word soldiers with personnel.Tailor your resume to the job descriptionA veteran thinks, and rightfully so, they can do human resources, operations, logistics kind of the whole gamut, said Cooper. While thats true, and theres nothing wrong with that mindset, it actual ly hurts them in the search.Veterans are trusted with a great deal of responsibility and can serve in a wide variety of roles throughout their military career. Its tricky to narrow all that experience down. Referring to some of the resumes she receives from her clients, St. Pierre jokingly said theyre like eight pages long.Once a transitioning veteran decides which direction to take their career, they benefit from removing as much unrelated experience as possible. A targeted resume is not a list of everything youve done. Rather, it answers the questions asked in the job description. Tailoring your resume to the job description makes it fast and easy for the recruiter to landsee how youll make an impact.Look at the things that are important to the employer in the job description, said Madden. Its great that youve done these things in the military, but the employer is looking for XYZ.We really want to focus on speaking the language of the employer, added St. Pierre. Both St. Pierre and Madden advocate for using Jobscan to home in on what the employer wants to see. Jobscan analyzes your resume against the job description to see which skills and requirements youre missing.Thats what weve been able to help them do time and again by using Jobscan, said Madden. Weve been able to really take the game to another level because were speaking the language and were showing the veterans live, this is what it looks like.I bring up the Jobscan report and I walk them through it, said St. Pierre. Every single section, what it means, how to incorporate those keywords into the resume. It makes sense to them.Include your military measurable resultsAccomplishments and achievements are a great way for anyone to make their resume stand out. A military veterans experience is full of opportunities to include these measurable results.Usually what I do is talk veterans through stories and really figure out, what are the results? said Cooper. It needs to have a number whether its man hour s, reduction in steps, or additional steps for compliance. For some veterans, aspects of their roles might overshadow seemingly mundane results, making it difficult for them to see the value. Nobody in the corporate world cares that you were a fighter pilot, pleaded Cooper. How much money did you save by buying doors or surfboards or windshields belastung year?We all deal with money because the military a global force now, continued Cooper. Simple things like government travel cards, saving money, coming up with better ways to save money can make for quality measurable results on a military-to-civilian resume.Theres so much project management within the military, St. Pierre used as an example. A strong action verb would be, Collaborated with a team of six senior leaders to develop a security action plan that resulted in zero incidents within the command for the year of 2017.As previously mentioned, some of these results can be found in the VMET or fit evals. Sometimes I take exact se ntences from them because their leaders did a great job of quantifying and explaining the veterans accomplishments, said St. Pierre.Measurable results should be sprinkled throughout your resume, from your summary section down through your work experience.Military-to-civilian resume formatting tipsFormatting your military resume presents a unique challenge. You might have served through a series of diverse roles with increasing responsibility all around the world. How do you sum that up on a resume in a way that makes sense? The first top half of the resume is the most important, said St. Pierre. That is what a recruiter will spend their six-to-seven seconds on.After your name and contact information, St. Pierre recommends having a strong summary statementthat introduces that youre a veteran as well as your areas of expertise. She also recommends including a skills sectionso that the recruiter can easily find those resume keywords that they need.If you went back to school after leavin g the military and youre not far removed from earning a degree, your education section can come next. When it comes to your experience section, I wouldnt separate it out, military and civilian, advised St. Pierre. I would just put Work Experience.St. Pierre recommends breaking up your different roles within the military, but underneath a single heading for the service branch, resulting in something like thisSt. Pierre recommends breaking your military experience into multiple sections. This format helps keep the resume in a format familiar to the recruiter, and should help to minimize confusion.Get help if you need itSeek out assistance, concluded St. Pierre. Veterans arent expert resume writers and thats okay. Seek out subject matter experts and mentors. Like the Wounded Warrior Project Warriors to Work program, there are many, many VSOs out there that help. There are also people online willing to help. Create a LinkedIn profile and follow or reach out to veteran career coaches and ad vocates like Michael Quinn, Leslie Coffey, Daniel Savage, Maggie Cutler, Tom Cal,Jacqueline Contreras, and others for tips, resources, and mentorship during your transition.Ready for mora?Resume TipsResume SectionsReasons You Cant Find a JobFacebook Commentswpdevar_comment_1 span,wpdevar_comment_1 iframewidth100% important
